Larry Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became widely known.
Summers commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the potential of the company, and look forward observing their progress".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages demonstrated that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company said it respected the economist's determination to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the Board," the company stated.
Congressional Action
This announcement arrives after both chambers of the US legislature decided on this week to endorse a bill that would require the Department of Justice to release its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will afterward move to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has said he plans to endorse the measure, after modifying his position on the subject following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the legislative panel days ago referenced numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The communications indicated that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the academic to influential world leaders.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were shared with the public, Summers stated he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised judgment to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to rebuild confidence and repair relationships with the persons most important to me".
Career Background
Summers occupied senior posts under party leaders; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He headed the university from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his departure from public roles previously on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in Washington where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was ceased to be associated with the institution.
He entered the directorate of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive the company leader.
