The Animated Series' Showrunner Unveils Rosie and Alastor's Backstory Is a Major Season 3 Tease
Devoted viewers of the show finally received a much-anticipated backstory in the second season's episode 4, titled “It's a Deal.” This episode will probably spark a lot of discussion and pose many inquiries about the nature of one particular demon Overlord who seems far more powerful than anyone previously understood. The new revelations feature a glimpse into the human life of a fan-favorite character prior to his demise and sentence to the underworld.
A Significant Hint for Upcoming Installments
The series creator disclosed a secret about “It's a Deal” – it serves as a huge hint for the third season. Additionally, she offered further details into the methodology of designing the human versions of her infernal animated characters.
Warning: Spoilers for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back discloses that fan-favorite character Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the afterlife beforehand to secure a strong position there. The charismatic leader, the charismatic leader the cannibal faction in Hell, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his eternal spirit.
This prompts an important query: In what way is Rosie powerful enough to elevate Alastor over all other Sinner Demons?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a larger narrative that involves a great deal, moving into the third season,” the creator states. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she so strong? The solution might be many things, but the revelation is in season 3. I am thrilled for fans to witness it.”
There’s no telling the duration viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The studios have green-lit seasons 3 and 4, but the creator frequently remarks that animated production is a time-consuming endeavor, and later seasons are undated. Still, she states holding off on specific information is a crucial aspect of maintaining season 2’s attention in the right places.
“The difficulty of any agreement with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is providing the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and letting that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I'm very excited.”
Mysteries Resolved in The Next Season
The creator promises that season 3 will tackle the questions followers have been posing, such as why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to vanish for a seven-year period, which weakened his power in the infernal realm.
“The entire seven-year span, and the deals these individuals are making, and everything — it's feeding into a bigger narrative,” she says.
Meanwhile, the origin story episode provides another glimpse into what the core cast of Sinner Demons looked like as mortals, following after viewing Sir Pentious’ historical human form in the second episode. She explains that a lot of thought was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of these personas hold great significance,” she says. “They vary from appearing quite distinct from their infernal version to looking almost identical. With Pentious, the first one we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between choosing a design that symbolizes the personality, as opposed to going with something that's very time-period accurate. We leaned toward creating a design that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘Nobody really had long hair of that style in that historical period.’ But simultaneously, we think the outline is so important, and we also just thought he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he's a hermit, so he just let his hair grow out. So there's always a way. As we design the human versions of these characters […] it is a very enjoyable process to explore and figure out. I'm excited for people to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
Fresh installments of Hazbin Hotel the second season are released on Wednesdays on the streaming service.
